Anglican post declined

PA Wellington The person nominated Bishop of Wellington by the electoral synod last month has declined the nomination. The surprise rejection of the post will put back a decision several months. The Acting Primate, the Rt. Rev. Peter Sutton, Bishop of Nelson, said that another session of the electoral synod would be reconvened after consultation with the Wellington diocese. The diocesan secretary, Mr Derek Steele, said that this was likely to be in the first half of February, Mr Sutton said that he did not know the reason for the nominee’s declining the post, as he was given just a

yes or no answer. There is an elaborate procedure governing the choice of a new bishop. r An electoral synod is convened, nominations are called for, discussed and voted on.

Once a decision is made, Bishop Sutton, as senior bishop, consults all other bishops in New Zealand, as well as Bishop Bryce, Bishop in Polynesia. Not till consent is gained from all standing committees can the nominee be approached. He then has the right, to refuse.

Bishop Norman, the incumbent, will retire in February. It was hoped his replacement .would be consecrated in March. •
