Surprise for passengers
Passengers arriving at Christchurch Airport yesterday afternoon on flights frota Melbourne and Sydney had a surprise — no customs officers were on duty. About 600 passengers were affected, said the airport manager, Mr Hugh McCarroll. __
Customs officers are upset at the negative response of their employer (the Government) to their salary claims, said the Public Service Association’s Canterbury section secretary, Mr John McKenzie. “The local meeting overwhelmingly voted to
serve notice to take direct action,” he said. That action probably would be next month, as 14 days notice would have to be given. . There were 115 customs officers at the Christchurch meeting, one of a series of national stop-works called to discuss the salary issue.
