Road closing approved
Competitors in next years’ Coast to Coast triathlon may not have as much traffic to contend with along the race’s last cycling stage. The Malvern County Council yesterday approved in principle the. closing of the Old West Coast Road to spectator traffic westbound on February 2, from where the road turns off the State highway near the Waimakariri Gorge to the gun club at Yaldhurst. Residents would still be able to use the road and so would eastbound traffic. Cr M. R. Wilson said the council should support the idea and get more details of how long people would be cycling along the road.
“I think we should close it for the competitors’ safety,” he said. “It is quite hazardous when the race is on.”
