Lauderbach makes comeback

By FRANK DUGGAN The aim of most speedboat drivers is to own a boat designed and built by the famous Lauderbach company of the United States. John Diamanti, of Blenheim, has done just that and in unusual circumstances. North-east Express, built nine years ago and one of the top Grana Prix boats in the United States in the early 1980 s, was recently discovered lying idle and rapidly deteriorating in an American backwater. To all intents and purposes the boat had ran her last race, but then Diamanti, an avid sprint boat driver, got word of her. He quickly bought North-east Express and the

boat was shipped to Christchurch to be repaired by the father and son combination of Peter Knights. The boat was released by customs on Monday looking the worse for wear, but the rig is still quite spectacular. North-east Express is one of only three imported Lauderbachs in New Zealand. The others are owned in Wellington and Nelson and all three will be competing in next year’s international series. North-east Express was one, of the top six Grand Prix boats -in the United States for several years and was formerly used by the current seven-litre world waterspeed record-holder, Kent McPhail.
