(1) A Trace Element Analyst is required to take responsibility for a wide range of trace element work. Analysis is principally by atomic absorption spectrometry using flame, furnace .and hydride techniques. At present three AA’s are in regular use, including a new Varian AA4O. Sample include water, effluent, foods, metals, fertilizer, biological materials, etc. While experience in this area is very desirable new graduates with appropriate qualifications would be considered. (2) A Food Analyst is required to specialise in the analysis of foods. This includes fishmeal, fish shellfish, animal feeds, fats, oils, canned goods, frozen foods, flour, spices, etc. Analytical techniques include wet chemical methods, GLC, HPLC and analyses for vitamins, proximate analysis, sugars, residues etc. Familiarity with the N.Z. food industry and food analysis would be an advantage. While we are seeking an experienced analyst recent graduates would be considered. The Institute’s modern laboratories in Nelson are well etablished and the positions are with the consulting and analytical services group. With the expanding work of the Institute additional positions to these are anticipated in the near future.
