Bugatti attracts record price
NZPA-Reuter London A 1932 red Bugatti sports car has broken the European record price for a motor-vehicle at auction, fetching £440,000 ($1,152,800). The type 55 super sport roadster, an open-topped two-seater with a top speed of 112 miles (180 km an hour, was bought by an unnamed foreign collector at Sotheby’s classic car auction in London. The previous European record price was £246,000 ($644,520) paid by an American at the same sale last year for a 1930 Bentley which won fame for racing a train from Monte Carlo to London. The world record price for a car at auction is $U52,090,000 ($NZ3,699,300) paid by a Canadian in New York in June for a RollsRoyce once owned by the murdered pop star, Beatle, John Lennon. Earlier in the sale, a private Swiss bidder paid £55,000 ($144,000) for a 1932 Daimler once owned by Britain’s World War II leader, Sir Winston Churchill.
