Council to identify needs

Identifying the needs of young people in Canterbury and advising on youth issues are two of the aims of the Canterbury Regional Youth Council, which was set up recently. It was hoped that the council would be part of a network of regional youth councils throughout New Zealand, said a member, Mr

Lewis Brown. The council’s first official activity, a seminar for councillors, was held last weekend. The council plans to meet at least once a month. The idea of regional youth councils was put forward by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Tapsell, last year and Canterbury was to be a pilot scheme, he said.

It had taken some time for the council to be set Up because of the number of nominations to it It is made up of 12 young people and an advisory body of five. The council would also work with the local youth services distribution committee to allocate the committee’s regional funds, said Mr Brown.
