Wool prices rise

PA Napier An excellent bidding spread and a strong tone boosted the Napier wool sale yesterday. Chinese and Eastern European interests provided strong buying for both fleece and oddments, and good support came from the Continent, Japan and New Zealand carpet mills. The official report said that for the first time in living memory, the Napier December sale failed to attract its rostered quantity, and was reduced to a oneday sale of 31,174 bales including a small offering of scoured wool. The Wool Board did not

bid on any lines, and will pay only supplementary prices on fleece. The market indicator had increased from 327 c at the last sale in Wellington on December 6 to 335 c (greasy), and 450 c (clean). Compared with the Wellington sale, fleece of 34 microns and finer, and 35 micron B-style, was 2.5 per cent in sellers’ favour. Second-shear was 2.5 to 5 per cent in sellers’ favour, as were second pieces and locks. Bulky skirtings were up 5 per cent. Clothing oddments of average to poor quality and 50mm to 100 millimetres long were up 2.5 per

cent, and poorer styles were 7.5 per cent dearer. The offering was 50 per cent full fleece, 20 per cent second-shear, 6 per cent lambs’ wool and the rest oddments.

The offering was of good length and mostly sound but many lines showed pen stain. Others were cotted and yellowed because of rain.

The range of prices (clean-on-the-floor) was: Medium crossbred hogget, 34 micron, 110 to 125 mm; Good 471 to 479, average to good 466 to 471.

Crossbred fleece, 35 micron, 110 to 150 mm; Good 469 to 478, average to good 464 to 469, average 460 to 464. Crossbred fleece, 37 micron; Good 466 to 478, average to good 464 to 469, average 461 to 464. Second-shear fleece, 37 micron, 75/100 to 75/125mm: Good 454 to 465, average to good 451 to 458. Second-shear, 37 microns, 50/75 to 50/100mm: Good 448 to 454, average to good 440 to 447. Crossbred pieces, 31/30 micron, 75/125mm: Average-poor 418 to 425.
