Wharenui on top

Auckland won the most titles in the national teleprinter swimming finals last Saturday, but the Canterbury clubs, Wharenui and New Brighton, swamped their Auckland counterparts in the national club points competition. Wharenui was the country’s top club. Its swimmers amassed 418 points, 62 more than New Brighton Hertz. In fact, the totals of the two clubs were not far below the Auckland centre’s entire total of 496. The third club was Roskill. of Auckland.

with 181 points. A New Zealand selector, Mr Doug Cain, of Christchurch, said that it was worrying that the leading Auckland club, Roskill, earned all its points in the 14 years and under section. That indicated a lack of swimming depth in the 12 years and under and 10 years and under age groups. The Bay of Plenty centre’s clubs scored 274 points and the Waikato centre’s clubs totalled 212. The top 10 clubs at the finals were:

Wharenui 418, New Brighton 356, Roskill 181, Hisa Tauraurua (Auckland) 143, Mount Maunganui 135, North Shore 84, Rovers (Hamilton) 82, Matamata 66, Collegiate (Southland) 67, Water Hole (Auckland) 63. The centre points totals were: Canterbuy 782, Auckland 496, Bay of Plenty 274, Waikato 212, Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay and Counties 73, Southland 67, Eastern Districts 42, Otago 40, Wellington 24, Nelson-Marl-borough 11, Manawatu 9.
