Travel bookings heavy

PA Wellington Both Air New Zealand and Railways are reporting heavy demand for their services over the Christmas and New Year period. An additional demand for the holiday period had been noticed this week, said an Air New Zealand spokesman.

Extra flights were being organised to cater especially for the Main Trunk services between Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. There were still seats available to all destinations but people booking now would have to take the flights they could get. A Railways spokesman said bookings were fairly heavy on all services and only limited space was available.

Some Cook Strait ferry crossings from Boxing Day were booked out, and train and coach services throughout New Zealand were “filling up fast.”
