N.Z. lamb sought

PA Wellington Demand for New Zealand lamb improved this week as major retailers in Britain found it increasingly difficult to obtain supnlies of popular light to medium-weight carcases, for the immediate postChristmas period. A slight improvement in consumer demand for beef reflected the growing interest for the Christmas trade, although prices have not advanced. Pork continued in steady demand at unchanged levels.

On the Smithfield market this week New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at 60p to 61p a lb ($NZ3.45 to $NZ3,52 a kg). Because of a three-day kill week around the holiday period, imported beef prices nave increased. Imported manufacturing beef prices have also improved. The average prices for imported beef increased by 1c this week to $U51.025 a lb c.i.f. (JNZ3.96 a kg), while average S rices for cow beef rose by 3c ) 97c a lb c.i.f. (?NZ3.74 a kg).
