Athletic collection: hair that moves
Women’s participation in sports has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. Fashion has kept pace with sports — fibres have become easier to move in, styles encourage comfort and movement. Bnt hairstyles for many women athletes, have not been adapted. Most women athletes concerned themselves with function. Many have regarded hair as a burden. The art directors of Vidal Sassoon conducted a weeklong, fact-finding survey at a United States National Sports Festival. Every day more than 100 athletes were interviewed.
Their findings were translated into the "Athletic Collection,” featured at right. ’ “A hairstyle that looks great while sitting in the salon chair can be disastrous in action,” says Christopher Brooker, Sassoon’s creative director. “Women should be able to be both competitive and physically strong, apd still retain a hairstyle that performs well and can set a winning ‘style’ before the television cameras. “The idea is to improve hair movement, and make hair look as though it is moving even when perfectly still,” he says.
