Winning side for one-dayers?
PA Auckland The New Zealand cricket captain, Jeremy Coney, says he would like to take back to Australia for the one-day internationals the side he led to the test triumph over the Australians.
Speaking when the New Zealanders returned to Auckland last evening, Coney said the side was obviously a matter for the national selectors, but he did not expect any sensational changes. “We worked Very well as a unit in Australia,” said Coney. “One of the nice features of the tour was that we were a very harmonious group who enjoyed playing cricket together — and that was important to our approach and our performance.”
Coney said he expected an improvement in the New
Zealand standard for the one-day internationals against Australia and India in January and February. “In the last couple of years our one-day performances have not been as good as they should have been. We have lost the consistency we used to have, and there is a great deal of our one-day game to be worked on.”
, Previously Coney has not been an enthusiastic oneday captain, but is now more confident.
“I regard one-day matches now as a challenge. It is a completely different game, with a different set of skills. But I think the relationship that Glenn Turner and I have developed on this tour will stand us in good stead in those one-day games. “There will be mistakes.
That is inevitable, but we must eliminate those mistakes and learn as quickly as possible from them. I think that the one-day series will be as enjoyable as this test series has been.”
Commenting on what has been one of New Zealand’s most successful overseas tours, Coney said there had been many factors behind the team’s success.
“While I should not single out anyone in terms of performance, I have to say that Richard Hadlee was outstanding. But that was not the only reason for our victory. “We were underestimated for our experience and our ability. The depth of our preparation was better than I have known on previous tours, and the experience, and knowledge of Glenn Turner helped us greatly.”
