Six months jail for robbery
For what was described as a bold robbery committed after obvious planning, Anthony Paul Curtis, aged 29, was jailed for six months by Mr Justice Heron in the High Court yesterday. Curtis was found guilty by a jury on a charge of aggravated robbery of Walter Lawrence Bradley, a tally clerk, in the toilets at the Lancaster park Hotel on July 21. Curtis and another man who has not been found stole Mr Bradley’s billfold which held $55. His Honour said that Curtis had been jailed last year for robbery which bore a disconcerting similarity to his present offence. It was reported that Curtis’s attitude had changed for the better and he would be given a chance in the hope ’ that he had
finished with this type of behaviour, his Honour said. For Curtis, Mr A. M. Mclntosh said that no weapon was used, no threat made, and no serious violence was inflicted on the victim.
The probation officer had described Curtis as a pleasant and forthcoming young man who was outwardly good-natured. Although there had been a long period when he had not offended, Curtis fell from, grace last year and was jailed for nine months on a robbery charge similar to the present offence. As a result of the prison term his stable de facto relationship had broken down.
Mr Mclntosh asked that Curtis be given a final chance because he was now living in a supportive environment and had a job.
