Work on bus strike
The Labour Department in Wellington is still working on ways to resolve the dispute which has stopped buses in Christchurch and four other cities.
The dispute is over a claim by the Tramway Workers’ Union for an industry allowance. The union is prepared to put the dis-
pute in the hands of a chairman of a compulsory conference, but the employers prefer the dispute to be resolved in accordance with section 1258 of the
Industrial Relations Act, providing a conciliator to chair a meeting of the parties and to refer it to the Arbitration Court if they fail to settle.
