Benefit to strike families opposed
PA Wellington. The taxpayer should not be asked to support those on strike, except in extraordinary circumstances, says the Opposition spokesman on social welfare, Mr Venn Young. The Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus, on Tuesday said her department would not withhold assistance to families who had lost their only income through strike action. Mrs Hercus said such payments were made by the
previous Government and the policy had not changed. Mr Young has said that at the time of the change of Government, legislation was being drafted to give the Social Security Commission the right to decline applications for welfare assistance where there was a strike but where other work was available, Mr Young said. “For reasons best known to herself, the Minister decided not to proceed with the proposed amendment,” he said.
