Maori leader ‘concerned’
PA Hamilton The Raglan Maori leader, Eva Rickard, says she is concerned about the move from Waitangi to Wellington of the Treaty of Waitangi celebrations.: “I do not know who manipulated that sort of agreement,” she said. “But after years and years of protests, they may have decided to make Waitangi a place of peace, and go down to Wellington instead.” However, she said the fact that celebrations were going to continue showed that the Government had no intention of meeting the requests of Te Kotahitanga and Hikoi participants that celebrations be stopped until the Government had properly addressed Maori grievances under the treaty. The day should be used for debate about the treaty, Mrs Rickard said. <
However, Mrs Rickard said that she would neither celebrate nor protest against the Treaty of Waitangi on Waitangi Dav.
