9% increase refused
Kindergarten teachers held stop-work meetings yesterday to discuss the breakdown in their award talks.
Teachers in Canterbury and Westland decided not to accept the 9 per cent increase offered for head teachers. Basic and senior teachers had been offered 15 per cent increases which were acceptable, but the offer for head teachers would not be sufficient to keep experi-
enced teachers in the service, said the national president of the Kindergarten Teachers’ Association, Ms Jeanie McCafferty. Christchurch has 58 kindergartens and each one has a head teacher. No further industrial action is planned at present but talks between the association and the Education Services Committee are due to begin again on Tuesday.
