Kingston Flier to run dry
Wellington reporter Passengers aboard the Kingston Flier train will have to do without alcoholic refreshment in the meantime.'
There will need to be an amendment to the Sale of Liquor Act before alcohol can be served on the train. The Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, said he had no intention of amending the legislation until the working party now considering it had finished. -
He said there was no specific liquor licence available under the legislation to allow the sale of liquor on the Kingston Flier. A special exemption did exist for liquor sold on trains run by the Railways Corporation, for which a licence was not needed.
The only form of conveyance for which a special liquor licence was provided was a ship. The working party, under the chairmanship of Sir
George Laking, was making a fundamental review of the liquor laws and the matter of selling liquor on trains and other forms of conveyance would probably, be addressed during the review. “I am not prepared to sponsor any amendments to the liquor laws on this matter until that review has been completed,” Mr Palmer said.
