Lomondy fit for Trentham
Special correspondent Palmerston North
Lomondy faces a tough challenge in the Toyota Corolla Handicap at Trentham tomorrow but the Awapuni galloper was impressive enough in his final trial yesterday morning to suggest he has a big chance against the likes of Kiwi, Delarenne and several other top-line stayers. Lomondy will be ridden by Jim Walker, who has been until now the regular rider of Twelve Gauge. That horse will have the services of Tony Allan this week. The last time Walker handled Lomondy he rode a copybook race to win at the Napier Park meeting earlier this month. Lomondy was always going well with High Command and they ran 1400 m on a fast inside trial grass in Imin 31s, the last 600 m in 39.65. Lomondy ran a fair race at Waikato and is right, at his best for his Trentham test. High Command ran on at Levin and has a chance against the highweight horses this week-end.
Super Tai was never at top running 1200 m in lmin 18s, the last 600 m in 39s and it will surprise if he does not improve on his disappointing run at Levin. Time honours went to former northern galloper, Norfolk Bard, which will be
having his first start for Laurie Christensen in the Odlin’s Plate.
Norfolk Bard, which was placed in an Avondale Guineas, ran away from Potash over 1000 m in lmin 2.45, the last 600 m in 38.45. Norfolk Bard has had a few problems, yet on this trial he could go well tomorrow. Tregenna ran 800 m in 51s, the last 600 m in 38.45. There is a chance he might race at Wanganui next week or at Otaki. He recorded his best performance to date in winning at Levin. Rivetta ran from the 800 m in 51s, the last 600 m in 38s and Santaray was impressive over 800 m in 495, the last 600 m in 375. She has been running fair races this season and is in with a chance at Trentham.
Chibuku shaded Inclusion oyer 1000 m in lmin 3.45, the last 600 m in 38.45. Chibuku faces a strong field in the Odlin’s Plate but he should cope. Celerina, a prospect for the Odlins’ Plate, worked over 1000 m in lmin 3.45, the last 600 m in 38.45. She is very well. Garbo and Sound Lady took lmin 35s for 1400 m, the
last 600 m in 41.65. Both have prospects at Trentham, with Garbo a likely highweight improver. Sound Lady rattled home at Waipukurau last week and could be coming right.
