Gene Evander due for win
Special correspondent Auckland Gene Evander has been racing so well he must have a great chance in the Rolfe Memorial on the opening night of the Thames Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow evening. Success for the seven-year-old Cambridge gelding would be overdue as well as thoroughly deserved. The last time Gene Evander won was at Alexandra Park on May 12, 1984, however, he has had 30 starts since for one second, four thirds, five fourths and quite a few fifths.
In his latest appearance at Alexandra Park on November 22 he was second in the Franklin Cup beaten a short neck to Vance Glory, which gave him a start of 20 metres.
Vance Glory is also in the Rolfe Memorial this time though he is back to the 30 metre mark and the distance 2700 metres is 500 metres shorter.
The race has drawn most of the best pacers in the north and a well-performed visitor from Ashburton, Lew
Foy. Lew Foy’s latest form however, has not been very good and he deserves to be at fairly liberal odds.
