Brass band to herald visit by Father Christmas
Hundreds of people will line the streets of Kaiapoi tomorrow to welcome Father Christmas to the town.
groups will take place during the afternoon. There will be prizes for the best floats and the annual shield will be presented for the winning float.
Father Christmas will be heralded to the town by the Kaiapoi Brass Band which is celebrating its centennial year.
The crowd will be entertained by the Wizard, the Kaiapoi Brass Band, a Maori group, marching girls, clowns, and Bucketts gym group. There will be a large variety of stalls run by community groups including soft toys, raffles, and vegetables. A noddy train will provide rides along with several horse drawn vehicles
They will be followed by about 37 floats, traction engines, horse and carts, vintage cars, tractors and fire engines, stock cars and decorated cycles. This year’s Kaiapoi Christmas Carnival procession will leave at the earlier time of 11.30 a.m. from Davie. Floats will begin to assemble by 11 a.m. The procession will travel down Williams Street (the main street) and turn into Hilton Street to Murphy Park. People wishing to view the arrival of Santa should assemble along Williams Street between the bridge and Hilton Street. The procession will be greeted by the Mayor of Kaiapoi, Mr Howard Cumberland. He will officially open the carnival side of the activities in Murphy Park.

People wishing to see Father Christmas arrive in Kaiapoi tomorrow will also have the opportunity to shop leisurely during the morning. Most Kaiapoi stores will be open from 9 a.m. Many will be open every Saturday morning until Christmas.
