THE BACKDOOR BLUES BAND “The Backdoor Blues Band” (Jayrem JAYI33 EP).
The Backdoor Blues Band, now residing in Wellington, have built up a following in the South Island and lower half of the North Island with their lively stage show — recognition for this being their spot on the Koru Care charity show which was televised live in September. But, it must be said that this EP is disappointing from such a lively group. There is nothing wrong with the sound, production, or the songs, but it is just that they are all covers. The EP opens with the soul standard, “Respect,” and side two starts with the R. and B.
classic, “Messin’ With The Kid.” Todd Rundgren’s “Kiddy Boy” gets a spin too, but it would have been much more interesting to see what the band could do with originals. After all, other blues musicians, including New Zealanders, such as Hammond Gamble, are capable of penning songs. —NEVIN TOPP
