Tonnage halved through port

Cargo tonnage handled through the port of Lyttelton in October was only iust over half that which passed through the port in October last year. Altogether 144,612 tonnes of cargo was handled this October, compared with 258,872 tonnes last October. The board’s marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, told the December meeting that cargo decreases by commodity were across the board, although a large portion of the decease was in coal and petroleum products. These two depended on ship scheduling, he said. The continued fall in coastal cargo volumes was of special concern.

“While it is important that one month in isolation is not seen as an over-all indicator, the downward trend in tonnage is perturbing. The economic indicators for the coming year are increasingly showing a more static economy than was originally forecast,” he said. The export meat trade to the Middle East, Iran and Europe was under particular threat from the E.E.C. beef stockpile. There was a need for New Zealand to move to exporting consumer-ready chilled and boneless meats. ARRIVALS
