British agreement on ‘star wars’
NZPA-Reuter Brussels Britain and the United States said this week that they were close to signing an agreement on British participation, in United States “star wars” research into a space-based defence against missiles. “I think we are very close to being able to sign,” the United States Defence Secretary, Caspar Weinberger, told a news conference after talks with the British Defence Secretary, Micbael Heseltine. Only minor drafting details remained to be resolved, he said.
Mr Heseltine, speaking separately to reporters, said no substantive issues were outstanding and only technical details needed to be ironed out. “I hope we can conclude it soon,” he said. Britain would be the first Western ally to agree officially to participate in the SUS 26 billion ($NZ45.5 billion) Strategic Defence Initiative (5.D.1.) and the Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, said last week she expected to conclude a deal by Christmas. West Germany has said it too will decide by Christmas on the form of an S.D.I. participation agreement.
