Harbour Board upset at decision

Lyttelton Harbour Board members are unhappy about a decision by the Minister of Energy, Mr Tizard, not to renew the board’s electricity supply licence. The decision means the board will no longer buy electricity direct from the national grid, and will instead become part of the recently formed Port Hills Energy Authority. Yesterday’s monthly meeting of the board was shown a letter from Mr Tizard, which said the board’s supply licence would not be renewed after March 31 next.

The board’s general manager, Mr lan Brokenshire, said the directive was unfortunate as the board had recently installed power-saving equipment, and was working towards becoming an efficient electricity user.

The board was confused by the Minister’s decision in light of the stated intention of the , chairman of the Local Government Commission, Mr Brian Elwood, to have no more than two supply authorities in Canterbury by October, 1987. This would probably make the Port Hills Authority redundant. The board decided to object formally to Mr Tizard’s decision, and will begin discussions with the Port Hills Authority on the tariff it will set. -
