Alpine Lodge harmonises with park environment
The architects, lan Jack and Associates, of Nelson, were presented with an award by the New Zealand Institute of Architects for their work on the tourist retreat, the Alpine Lodge complex at Lake Rotoiti.
Located in native bush surroundings with the dramatic back-drop of the Saint Arnaud Range, the complex was for successfully designed to harmonise the lodge with the National Park environment.
The architects relied on a simple palette of materials in the composition of forms, textures and colours.
According to the citation by the N.Z.I.A. while working within the client’s limited budget constraints, lan Jack and Associates made a significant contribution to the built environment.
Site planning was well considered to allow for easy vehicle and guest access, impressive views from bedrooms and public spaces. They also provided for future additional accommodation should the need arise. Internal spaces have a rich and welcoming atmosphere, which is aided by
the use of well detailed timber linings and joinery. According to the N.Z.1.A., lan Jack and Associates displayed a “high level of competence in the production of a complex well suited to the building task and respected and enjoyed by guests and local inhabitants.”
