Breughel on sale
NZPA-AFP Geneva A painting by the Flemish master, Pieter Breughel the Younger, which belonged to Hitler and later had a “mysterious” history, was withdrawn from auction after bids fell short of the 5U5238.000 ($414,120) reserve.
However, a group of Belgian financiers later matched the reserve price, at which a sale was now expected, said the auctioneer, Pierre-Yves Gabus. The 58.5 cm by 77cm picture of a village. fair was stamped on the back by the French Secret Service at the end of World War 11, as coming from Hitler’s personal collection, Mr Gabus said.
