Maori cancer levels high
PA Wellington Maori men have one of the highest levels of lung cancer in the world, according to a survey by the World Health Organisation. They are surpassed only by the black population of New Orleans in the survey, which shows that New Orleans blacks have a level of 107 cases of lung cancer among 100,000 males. Maori males have lung cancer levels of 105 cases in 100,000.Glasgow has earned a new reputation as lung can-
cer capital of the world. The survey shows that one man in each 500 living in the Scottish city develops the disease. Health officials say the reason that Maori men figure so badly in the survey is that both the 1976 and the 1981 census have shown them to be heavy smokers. The deputy chief statistician at the National Health Statistics Centre, Mr Jim Fraser, says almost all sufferers of lung cancer are either regular smokers or former regular smokers.
