TOMMEE TIPPEE & NUK LATEX TEATS & SOOTHERS PROVED SAFE. The Directors-General of DSIR and Health advise that further tests on Tomrnee Tippee and Nuk Latex Teats and Soothers had shown that contrary to earlier tests they did not contain nitrosamine levels above those recommended by the Food Standards Committee. These tests have cleared the Tomrnee Tippee and Nuk products withdrawn from the market following a Privileged Statement by the Director-General of Health, Dr R A Barker, on 17 October. This statement claimed that these products, namely, Tomrnee Tippee Infahush Orthodontic soother (latex rubber made in Thailand), Tomrnee Tippee Ventilated Infahush soother (natural rubber made in Thailand), Tomrnee Tippee Orthodontic Infateat (natural rubber made in Thailand), NukOrthodontic pacifier (latex rubber made in Germany); did not meet the required standard. Following the initial survey, additional samples of those products have been checked in four overseas laboratories, including the top British and Canadian Government Laboratories. Those tests have shown that the nitrosamine levels in the products were substantially lower than previously indicated by the test results obtained by the DSIR and used as the basis of the Privileged Statement. This had been confirmed by the most recent DSIR tests. The Department of Health therefore advises that the Tomrnee Tippee and Nuk products comply with the standard, and have always done so and can now be safely used. The Department of Health has said that it will ask for tests or retests of all other similar products available in retail outlets. The surveillance programme for all such products will continue. The Department of Health, the DSIR, the Chemists Guild and the pharmaceutical wholesalers and importers have recently agreed to a set of procedures to test for nitrosamines prior to the release of baby feeding devices on to the New Zealand market. The Department of Health appreciates that the removal of the named products from the market has caused inconvenience and concern to the companies involved and to the general public. Dr Barker expressed regret that this had occurred. Whilst breast feeding is best, some mothers for a variety of reasons cannot breast feed their babies. The measures taken will remove any doubt that the Tomrnee Tippee and Nuk products named can be safely used. 41 i ■— v I —-— ' " — —*—“— ————*
