Mt Cook hut fees up 150 p.c.

PA Timaru Fees for high-altitude huts in the Mount Cook National Park were increased 150 per cent, from $4 to ?10 a night, from December 1.

There are 14 huts in the park. Revenue totalling $34,000 came from 8500 climbers and trampers in the 1984-85 season. On the basis of the new charges, this would now mean $85,000, which would be channelled to the Consolidated Account. “This has taken a lot of

people by surprise, including us,” said the senior ranger, Mr Alan Wilson. “It was a directive from Wellington by the Treasury, in conjunction with the Lands and Survey Department

“The aim is to achieve more reasonable returns on capital and maintenance costs associated with the huts.” Three huts — De La Beche, Murchison, and Godley — are owned by the Alpine Club. Members pay $lO, but are entitled to apply for a refund of $6.
