A.N.Z.U.S. petition presented
PA Wellington A petition with 70,000 signatures calling for New Zealand to remain in the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance has been presented to Parliament. Organised by the Auckland chemist, Dr Jim Sprott, the petition, titled “Peace Through Security,” said that however much nuclear weapons might dismay people, they were a reality in the world scene. The petition was presented by the National member of Parliament for Otago, Mr Warren Cooper. Refusing port access to nuclear-powered or nucleararmed ships was in contravention of the A.N.Z.U.S. treaty, the petition said, and was an action the Government had no mandate to take.
The petition, contained in 19 brown cardboard boxes, said only a referendum would give the Government authority to ban nuclear warships.
