Australian fears
Sir,—There can be little doubt that at heart Australians are just as anti-nuclear minded as New Zealanders, and perhaps are envious of this country’s heroic attitude. It would appear though that only one consideration has halted their following New Zealand’s lead — fear and potential threat of the grossly over-populated Asiatic near-north but a stone’s throw distant. And if Australia were to succumb in a decade or two, the suction would effortlessly swamp New Zealand. However, peace movements and monster demonstrations throughout both the Western and Eastern worlds will, before long, overwhelm militaristic Governments which persist, despite overwhelming grass roots opposition, in flagrant disregard of antinuclear sentiment as the balance of world opinion is decisively swinging against the possible monstrosity of a nuclear conflict. People in all countries are opting for the human race over the nuclear race. — Yours, etc., W. J. COLLINS. December 2, 1985.
