Coal-fired ships again

For the first time in 30 years, a new ship is to be powered by coalfired, steam-driven piston engines. An Anglo-United States consortium of companies is to supply the engine room system for the vessel, a $64 million ferry to be built at Kockums yard in Sweden for Polish Baltic Ships. The ferry will start service in 1987. Senior Green, from Wakefield in northern England, will supply boilers and a computerised controlsystem. Redler Conveyors, of Stroud, in the English Midlands, will provide coal-conveying equipment, and Peter Brotherhood, from Peterborough in eastern England, the turbines to generate electricity. The group is holding discussions with Kockums and another Polish shipping company about providing similar equipment for 12 bulk coal carriers. Coal-firing of ships is only about half as costly as oil-firing, and Poland is a major producer of coal. — British News Review.
