Obituary Mr Eric Froggatt
PA Wellington Mr James Alexander (Eric) Froggatt, a former battle of Britain pilot with a distinguished flying career, has died in Dunedin. He was 72. Mr Froggatt enlisted with the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a pilot at the outbreak of World War 11. He served as a flight lieutenant with No. 486 Squadron flying Hurricanes and Typhoons on dive-bombing missions against shipping from bases in England. Regarded as a pilot with exceptional skills, Mr Frog-
gatt took part in several sorties during the Battle of Britain and was renowned for his tension-breaking wit and humour in pre-take-off communication with other pilots. After the war, Mr Froggatt resumed his career with the Railways Department eventually becoming stationmaster at Ashburton and later stationmaster at Dunedin. He continued his interest in flying and was a flying instructor for several years at the old Taieri airport
