Petition supports N-free status
A new petition supporting New Zealand’s nuclear-free status and positive neutrality was opened by the Christchurch-based New Zealand Nuclear-Free Zone Committee yesterday. It would close on July 30 next year and be sent to Parliament about two weeks later, said the committee’s secretary, Mr Larry Ross. People would be able to sign the petition in about a fortnight when copies had been sent to all the committee’s members throughout New Zealand. Positive neutrality would be the best foreign and defence policy New Zealand could have, according to the committee. This would scrap military treaties such as A.N.Z.U.S. and declare New Zealand a neutral, peacemaking State within its legalised nuclearfree zone, Mr Ross said. It would also allow nonnuclear defence of New Zealand.
