Palace Guard appeals at Invercargill

Special correspondent Invercargill Palace Guard is poised to post his first six-year-old success in the D.B. Handicap, first leg of the Southland Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today. Last season, the Imperial Guard gelding emerged as one of the south’s most exciting stayers. He never stopped improving and broke through to beat the open stayers on the late autumn circuit. Palace Guard served notice of his progress in his

latest campaign when he rallied strongly for third over 1600 m on the first day. Peat and Chook A Rook, his two conquerors on that occasion, are missing today. They will contest the Grandstand Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Obviously improved by spring racing, Palace Guard whould be better-suited over 2200 m today. Courier Flight and Beau Bandy will be popular with punters. Courier Flight beat all but Anteaus in the Canterbury Gold Cup at Riccar-

ton. Beforehand, he had won the Gore Cup at Labour week-end. Beau Bandy resumed against the sprinters at Gore during Labour weekend, running third. He lugged in up the straight when fourth against the metric-milers on the first day of this Southland meeting.
