THREE MEMBERS of the Avon Aquatics Swimming Club had considerable success at the South Tslgnd short course masters swimming championships in Invercargill recently. Bob Buchanan broke four national records in the 70-year-dld age group —- the 50m butterfly, and the 50,100 and 200 m backstroke. Ngaire Prentice broke the 800 m women’s freestyle record setting a new time of 14min 31.05, almost three minutes inside the old mark. The third member, Jack Graham, recorded three personal best times. All three are going to the world masters championships next July in Japan. JOHN WHITEMAN, the Commonwealth Games representative, demonstrated his skill in winning the Malvern fullbore shooting Held day competition recently. Whiteman, who attended the Games in Brisbane three years ago, handled the tricky winds to record 147.14 over the 300, 500 and 600 yard course. Another of New Zealand’s most capable marksmen, Lindsay Smith, was second with a score of 146.13 with Ashburton’s John'Fleming third Vjith 145.1.
