School pupils get triathlon opportunity
A triathlon with a difference will be held on March 16 next year at the South Brighton Domain. The event will take in an eight kilometre paddle, a 32 kilometre cycle, and a 12 kilometre run section. However, the difference with Romano’s coastal triathlon is that it will have a special section for secondary school pupils over the age of fifteen. The course will also allow spectators to follow the progress of competitors
more closely than the normal triathlon course would. The paddle section will be a return leg along the Avon River, and the cycle section is an out-and-back course along the Summit Road, returning via Evans Pass. The run section will take in the seaside suburbs of South Brighton and Southshore, using ’ the beachfront and South Brighton’s walkway track. Triathlons with sections for secondary schools have
already been held in the North Island, but it is thought that this will be the first major event of its type in the South Island. Interest in triathlon events has increased recently with the-spectacular success of Christchurch’s internationally renowned triathletes, Erin Baker and John Heilemans, and the entreprenurial efforts of Robin Judkins, organiser of the well known “Coast to Coast” event.
