Board and boat races dominate carnival

Board and boat races dominated the first surf life-saving carnival of the season at Waikuku on Sunday. The carnival was held in light easterly conditions although a surf of one to one metre and a half meant there were some spectacular finishes. North Beach A, expected to dominate the two surf boat races in the open section, had to settle forathird place in the first race after buffeting in the surf, but showed it’s true talent by winning the second race later in the day. Anthony Dorreen (South Brighton) indicated he will ' again dominate the beach sprinting events this year when he won the beach sprint final. South Brighton won the sixman rescue and resuscitation event, forcing the strong Taylors Mistake A team into second place. These two squads are likely to feature in some close contests this season. Taylors Mistake underlined its dominance in board events by winning the malibu board relay, and Simon Davies and Richard Boyle finished first and second respectively in the surf ski race. Competition was intense in the women’s four place rescue and resuscitation. Only 0.8 of a point separated the first three teams - South Brighton B, Taylors Mistake and Waimairi A, in that order.
