‘Race against time’ in lamb market

NZPA staff correspondent London The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle, was disappointed the Meat Board pulled out of the British market so quickly, according to a leading British trade publication. The “Meat Trades Journal” said New Zealand meat exporters were racing against time to find ways to ensure the nation’s lamb trade with Britain “does not plunge into chaos”. The board decided to give up its three-year monopoly on sheepmeat exports nine months earlier than expected, and companies had

four weeks to hammer out an orderly change-over, the journal, said. Mr Moyle was reported as saying in an interview that while he was disappointed at the board’s speed in leaving the market, it was still possible to achieve a smooth return to private enterprise selling. “There will not be a return to the price-cutting days of the old system where a multitude of exporters and importers attempted to sell an identical product, resulting in low prices and poor returns.” Mr Moyle said the Government wanted fair, and reasonable competition.
