Cracks in Manapouri dam for repair
PA Invercargill After 12 months planning, repairs to serious cracks in the Manapouri hydro-elec-tric power station will begin today. The Ministry of Energy’s Electricity Division generation engineer in Dunedin, Mr Don Smith, said the station’s power load would be run down from 11 pm. yesterday and all power should be shut by 2 a.m. today. The power station would be isolated from the tailrace tonight and the water
pumped out so that a visual inspection of the gates could begin, Mr Smith said. It will be the fourth time the station has had to be shut down to repair the gates, and the 24-hour-a-day repair job should continue until December 15. ;
