Masterclass by Ferner
Christchurch flute enthusiasts will have the chance to listen and learn from New Zealand’s inter-nationally-renowned flautist, Anthony Ferner, on December 7 and 8. Bora in 1950, he began his musical studies in flute and piano gaining a bachelors degree in music at the University of Canterbury. With the help of a New Zealand Arts Council grant, Anthony Ferner studied for three years at the Guildhall School of Music in London; in flute under-Peter Lloyd, Trevor Wye, and William Bennett; in piano under Mary Peppin; and conducting under Barclay Wilson. He attended numerous masterclasses throughout Europe including those with Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway. He returned to New Zealand as principal flute, in the Canterbury Trust Orchestra, performing several concertos and subsequently established himself as a teacher, university . tutor and national broadcasting artist He also took up the position of musical director of the Timaru Orchestra and worked with youth orchestras in Christchurch.
In 1980 he left New Zealand for Australia playing flute for a couple of years in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, as well as performing as a soloist for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He returned to Europe in 1983 giving many well received recitals in Germany, England and Italy as a soloist, and more recently as a member of Trio Ambrosiano (Flute, Soprano, Piano). He conducted Vivaldi’s “Gloria” for the International Music Festival of British Schools in Italy. He also spent some time studying conducting with Maestro Umberto Cattini. He has recently returned to New Zealand and works as a coach, along with his wife, Nicola Waite. The two-day masterclass is designed to be of interest to all levels of players, whether beginners or advanced. There will be a chance for all participants to be heard, or for nonparticipating members to observe.
