Wharf pay round stalls

PA Wellington Wage talks for watersiders have broken down without agreement over employer suggestions for change. The waterfront employers’ advocate, Mr Ron Palmer, said no date had been set for further talks. The existing agreement will expire next month.

Mr Palmer said the employers were looking for manning reductions, greater flexibility in work methods and changes in the bonus system. The Watersiders’ Federation had said there was no time for such complex negotiations. • The employers had offered 10 per cent on wages as an interim pay-

ment until a restructuring agreement was achieved, and then 15.5 per cent, Mr Palmer said. . The union had agreed to talks on restructuring but wanted 17.5 per cent from January 1. The watersiders’ secretary, Mr Sam Jennings, said the talks had broken down but declined to comment further.
