Strong S.I. backing for Singapore link
South Island community leaders and exporters are expected to give solid support to Singapore Airlines in its bid to arrange direct flights between Christchurch and South-East Asia. Government aviation officials in Singapore have approached their counterparts in New Zealand seeking a review of the agreement which allows Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand each to make two flights a week between Auckland and Singapore. Talks are likely to be set down for next year.
Singapore Airline’s manager in Auckland, Mr David Lee, confirmed yesterday that the airline is keen to
fly to Christchurch. The director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association, Mr lan Howell, said a direct air link with Singapore would be a real boost for South Island exporters.
Such a link would overcome problems faced by exporters of perishable fruit who have to send their goods through Auckland.
Mr Howell’s enthusiasm for a Singapore air link is shared by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and the president of the South Island Promotion Association, Mr Bert Walker. Sir Hamish said the Christchurch City Council
would give as much support as it could to the Singapore Airlines bid.
“If Singapore Airlines is prepared to operate a service to Christchurch, either direct or on a co-terminal basis with Auckland, it would be a major move,” he said.
Mr Walker pledged the full support of 5.1.P.A., noting that a direct link with Singapore would benefit exporters throughout the South Island.
Air New Zealand executives preferred not to comment until Singapore Airlines produces more specific details of its plans.
