Special awards for Westport cadet
The efforts of Shaun Beveridge, of Westport, to participate in the harness horse cadet scheme received special recognition at an end-of-year function for the Canterbury region held last week.
Beveridge, sometimes accompanied by his employer, Keith Powell, but more often on his own, travelled from Westport to Christchurch on 16 occasions to attend the various sessions. Only once did he fail to arrive in Christchurch and that was ’ because of a mechanical failure. Shaun received three awards, including a threeweek stay at the Cambridge stables of Charlie Hunter
sponsored by an anonymous supporter of the scheme. There were 70 enrolled in the scheme and attendances varied between 40 and 50 for each session, usually held once a month, said the director of cadet training (trotting), Mr Bryan Sutherland. Although some in-ser-vice training had begun in Auckland and Waikato in 1982 and Canterbury in 1983, it had not been until August, 1984, that the equine cadet training scheme controlled by the Agricultural Training Council had been introduced, he said. The scheme now has the support of the majority of kindred bodies involved in trotting. This was shown at
the function when the president of the Canterbury branch of the Horsemen’s Association, Mr Malcolm Gillum, presented a cheque for $5OO to the chairman of the Canterbury cadet committee, Mr George Kelly. Awards presented were:— Stablehands: Tracey Hanger, Alister Scott, Karina Vermeulen.
Holders of matinee and trials licences: Tim Trathen, Rosemary McCarthy, Michael Smart.
Holders of professional Bor reinsmen’s licences: ger Austin, Kate Marriott, Michael Woodfield. Special awards: Lyn Biggs, Karen Clark, Barry Ward, Shaun Beveridge.
