Maltese didn’t want Americans —report
NZPA-AFP New York American anti-terrorist experts were not able to help Egyptian commandos free the hostages aboard the hijacked Egypt Air airliner in Malta on Monday because of a mix-up between Maltese and United States authorities, “The New York Times” reports.
Egypt had requested American technical help to free the plane and its passengers after the craft had been diverted to Malta the day before from an Athens-to-Cairo flight, the paper said. But Maltese “unwillingness” to permit American military aircraft to land,
protracted negotiations with Malta over conditions of entry, confusion on the ground, and serious gaps in communications had caused the United States team to arrive too late. The paper quoted unnamed Maltese and other sources in its report.
