Grass grows with N.Z. help
NZPA Quiyang China’s first forage grass seed farm, being built in Guizhou province with technique and equipment imported from New Zealand, has begun selling its products, Xinhua news agency reports. The farm, which started construction in October, 1983, harvested 4.5 tonnes gross weight of seeds and 45 tonnes of dried grass from 106 hectares. It also raised small numbers of cattle, pigs and sheep.
When completed next October, the farm will cultivate 133 ha of forage grass. At present 20 domestic and foreign grass varieties have been trial grown and selected. A seed processing and testing plant is being installed. Twenty New Zealand soil and seed experts are in China to help with farm construction and training of workers. Five Chinese are studying these subjects in New Zealand.
