Wgtn out to avenge loss
The Canterbury Shell Cup cricket squad will get its first serious preparation for the one-day limited-over series when it meets Wellington in its annual fixture at Burnside Park on December 15. The provincial teams for the Shell Trophy (three-day) and Cup (one-day) will be announced next Monday evening and the Wellington match — an annual event which began five years ago — represents Canterbury’s only significant limited-over build-up to the Cup series which starts on December 27. The match, of 50 overs duration, will feature black sightscreens, white balls and
coloured clothing for the two teams. Last year’s match, in Wellington, was rained out, and Wellington will be out to avenge its narrow defeat two years ago at Burnside Park. On that day, rain reduced the match to 35 overs, and Canterbury won by two wickets with three balls remaining.
The Canterbury representative squad, which will fill the A and B teams, and does not include the three New Zealand representatives, John Wright, Richard Hadlee and Vaughan Brown, who will be available for the one-day series only — assuming they return to Australia for the Benson and Hedges one-day competition in
January— is: Ray Jones (East-Shirley); David Boyle, Steve Bateman, David Farrant (BurnsideWest); Peter Rattray, Anup Nathu, Sean Tracy, Chris Flanagan, Stu Roberts (High School Old Boys); Bob Carter, Kevin Congdon, Ash Hart, Peter Kennedy (Sydenham); David Stead, David Hartshorn (Riccarton); Richard Leggat, Paul McEwan (Old Collegians); Barry Ward (South Canterbury); Michael Johnston, Steve McNally (North Canterbury); James Shipley, Craig Thiele, Rod Latham (Lancaster Park); Mark Priest, Andrew Nuttall (St Albans); Gary . MacDonald (Marist).
