Nicaraguan coffee sold

Ground coffee from Nicaragua is being imported by Trade Aid to help the people of the Central American country rebuild their country and economy, and was available after an official launching on Sunday in Christchurch. The country is at war with counter-revolutionaries opposed to its Sandinist Government. It is also the subject of a trade embargo

by the United States. The coffee will only be available through Trade Aid shops. The co-ordinator of Trade Aid, Ms Marie Venning, said the organisation’s alternative methods of coffee trading ensured maximum returns for the producers. The coffee was being bought from a group similar to Trade Aid in the Nether-

lands, where it was processed and packaged. For this reason the product was slightly more expensive than other brands of coffee, she said.

Although it was a longterm ideal aim to move farmers away from cash crops, money was needed now from the sale of coffee to help fanners to survive, said Ms Venning. » <
